Although many modern women would frown upon special treatment due entirely to their gender, most are happy to learn that car insurance for a woman can often be less costly than that for a man of the same age. This is not due to any kind of sexist or preferential treatment, but has to do strictly with the level of risk that an insurance company must assume for female drivers.
What does that mean?
Annual statistics over the course of many decades indicates some very clear patterns. Traffic violations and accident reports show that males are more likely to speed and drive aggressively, and to also have more costly auto accidents than female drivers. Insurance company statistics validate this claim because they tend to indicate that women making claims on their policies have lower total costs for repairs than their male counterparts.
Of course, this does not imply that all car insurance for a woman will be less expensive, and in fact industry statistics also indicate that many companies are levelling their basic costs and entirely eliminating the gender consideration altogether.
Instead of looking first a male or female, they are looking at such things as number of traffic violations on record, the data obtained through a credit report, and the type of vehicle(s) that will need coverage instead.
This means that car insurance for a woman is not always going to be noticeably less expensive, particularly if the woman in question has collected a large number of speeding tickets, or has a history of defaulting on debts.
How can a woman ensure that she gets the best price possible for her insurance coverage?
Like all drivers, the price of a policy tends to begin with the type of car being covered. There are “high profile” vehicles that are known for their expensive parts and service requirements, or for being on the lists of most frequently stolen vehicles. This means that a woman may want to look closely at the type of vehicle she drives, or is considering to purchase to determine the affordability of the insurance coverage.
Another issue with car insurance for a woman tends to be the cost of any “extras” such as roadside assistance or courtesy cars during periods of repair. Not all women need such services, and should be aware of the insurer that automatically inserts these costlier elements into their plan and request their removal before signing on for the coverage.
